Swimmer spotlight https://gusher.news/6230/features/swimmer-spotlight/ https://gusher.news/6230/features/swimmer-spotlight/#respond Fri, 28 Feb 2020 23:18:22 +0000 https://gusher.news/?p=6230 TUHS swimmer, Jake Johnson has been swimming since 4th grade. The most exciting part about this season, according to Jake, is,“The fact that we have a new coaching staff is definitely something new and exciting. Coaching a team of 20+ kids isn’t easy–especially in a strenuous sport like swim. I’m looking forward to seeing how we do this season against some of our rivals.”

Getting out of the pool after a race and seeing that you shattered one of your personal records is a feeling like no other. That’s definitely the highlight of every season for me.” Since the start of high school swim, Johnson has continued to improve: ”I’ve always been a freestyle swimmer, but high school swim changed that. I was thrown into events that I was unfamiliar with right off the bat. It’s made me comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Johnson seems optimistic about the remainder of the 2020 season. ”I think we’ll have a few people go off to valley. The qualification times are pretty tough this year, but definitely not impossible. It’s just a matter of working for it.”

Taft High appreciates their counselors https://gusher.news/6152/features/taft-high-appreciates-their-counselors/ https://gusher.news/6152/features/taft-high-appreciates-their-counselors/#respond Fri, 28 Feb 2020 23:17:24 +0000 https://gusher.news/?p=6152 On the week of February 3rd-7th, Taft Union High School had a counseling appreciation week for the counselors. We asked a series of questions to our counselors like why they decided to be a counselor.

Jana Durkan said, “It is very rewarding to see students work hard and, with that hard work, realize their goals and inner potential. This is why I wanted to become a counselor and help students with their educational journey!”

Tammy Sutherland replied with, “It fulfills me to help guide them to achieve their goals. I love coaching and being a counselor is similar to coaching. I help students improve, push themselves and learn from their mistakes. They inspire me every day.”

Lilia Murillo stated, “I like being a counselor because I get to learn many different kinds of students backgrounds and cultures. Also, not one day is the same for me. I can plan a day’s worth of work, but I never know what the day holds for me. Every day is a new day in my world of counseling. I wanted to make a difference in student’s lives. I want to be the person that students can talk to when things get complicated. I also enjoy seeing students grow physically and mentally. I love hearing about my student’s successes and challenges.”

Girls basketball season ends in first round of playoffs https://gusher.news/6190/sports/girls-basketball-season-ends-in-first-round-of-playoffs/ https://gusher.news/6190/sports/girls-basketball-season-ends-in-first-round-of-playoffs/#respond Thu, 27 Feb 2020 21:39:54 +0000 https://gusher.news/?p=6190 The Taft High all-senior basketball team played their first round of playoffs. This particular team of girls have played together since 6th grade at Lincoln Junior High. Lincoln is where they won league every year earning a “three-peat”. The team has had to overcome the challenge of only 8 girls. Despite this challenge, they ended their season with a record of 15-12. With this record, they headed to their first round of playoffs.

Going into their first round of playoffs, they played Highland. Starting the game against Highland was Reagan Hamilton, Bree Johansen, Mahaila Laulu, Morgan Pulido, and Sierra Kozloski. They played a hard first quarter, ending 10-12. By half, the score was 20-26. Still battling through the third with a score of 32-38. Toward the end of the fourth, both teams were tied 42-42. But, in the last couple seconds, Highland went for a three-pointer and made the shot. Ending the game was 45-42 Highland. Even with this loss, Taft played a strong game.

A couple of the players wanted to say some words about their season. Tayler Portenga stated, ”I’m very proud of how far the team has come in the last four years.” Reagan Hamilton said, ”Our team definitely improved as the year went on and we pushed every day to be our best. I  never doubted that anyone was giving less than 100%. This season didn’t end how we wanted, but we made memories that I will never forget and I’m so proud of all our hard work.” Morgan Pulido stated, “With only having eight players on the team, we managed to do really well this season. We got along very well, and I loved playing my last basketball season with this team. Yes, we won some and lost some, but that made us work even harder for the next game.”

Kindness week wraps up https://gusher.news/6158/features/kindness-week-wraps-up/ https://gusher.news/6158/features/kindness-week-wraps-up/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2020 21:46:45 +0000 https://gusher.news/?p=6158 Kindness Week was last week at Taft High and it was an enjoyable week; the fun dress up days added a nice touch.

The days gave students a chance to focus on something other than a test or project that was due and instead channel their creativity into unique outfits and how they could spread kindness.

“I twinned with my best friend and it was a blast!” said Reina Mendoza, “Yeah it was a lot of fun and we planned it for the whole week. Kindness week is a great thing to have in school, especially when someone tells you they like your outfit.”

Outfits weren’t the only thing Kindness Week had to offer. There were many activities students and staff could participate in.

The Kindness Challenge involved doing a simple thing such as opening a door, giving a hug, or complimenting someone. Sweet Treats were appreciated, and goodie bags with sweets are a nice gift to receive.

Kindness Paper Chains and  Kindness Grams were quaint aspects of the week; however, they definitely don’t hurt anyone’s feelings if they get one.

“Yeah it was super cool to find out I could send someone a gram and improve their day just by doing something small,” said Esteban Espinoza.

Kindness Quote Posters could be seen around the campus and were nice to read if you were on your way to take a test or file papers.

A Kindness Video is on the way sometime around the last week of February and will include interviews of staff and students regarding kind acts and how it affected them.

Both Reagan Hamilton and Raygan Wescott signed off of a scholarship to play softball. Reagan Hamilton signed off an athletic scholarship to pay for the University of the Pacific while Raygan Wescott signed off an academic scholarship to play for Alfred University in New York.

Reagan Hamilton started playing when she was four years old. She began travel ball at the age of eight. She has played for many different teams including: Bustos, Dirtdogs, Choppers, and currently Firecrackers Brashear. She signed off an athletic scholarship to attend for four years. She’d like to thank her parents for giving up their time to get her where she is today. “I’m very excited to get to finish out my last year playing at Taft High with my friends that I’ve been playing with since junior high.”

Raygan Wescott started playing at age four and started travel ball at seven years old. She’s played for about seven teams. Her college is D3 and she is getting an academic scholarship. She wants to thank her family, friends, coaches, teachers, and boyfriend. She would like to add,”Don’t give up because people are rude and don’t like you. Take that as motivation to prove them wrong.”

Well, to be specific, the class is selling roses and rainbow roses. If flowers aren’t sweet enough for you, you can buy a candy bouquet; some may say this is cheating (considering it’s not a flower), but who doesn’t love candy? Prices for these giving goodies range from $7.00 to $25.00 depending on the size and item that you are buying. Students can pick up the valentines on the 13th or 14th after school, or be delivered to the campus.
